A rose hip is the fruit of a rose. Also known as rose haw or rose hop  that typically is red-to-orange, but ranges from dark purple to black in some species. Rose hips begin to form after successful pollination of flowers in spring or early summer, and ripen in late summer through autumn..  I have vivid memories as a child gathering the hips of the wild dog rose in increasingly chilly evenings in September and October from the damp leaf strewn lanes on the outskirts of Wakefield in West Yorkshire. The wild dog rose grows up to ten feet tall and bears a white, very fragrant flower during the spring. Once the flower has bloomed, and all the petals have fallen the hip appears. We picked them and used in a wide variety of preparations.

Rose Hip Syrup

Mother used to make ‘Rose Hip Syrup’ and this was used extensively during the winter months to help fight of colds and flu etc. Of course, all those years ago it was not known why these old Romany Remedies worked, but we now know through modern science much more about them. For instance, we now understand the benefits of vitamin C and that rose hips contain more vitamin C than most other fruits, in fact they contain 50% more than oranges.

Rose Hip Tea

We often made a rose hip tea and it was taken to ease lower back pain and it worked, now we realise it was in fact helping to improve, and relieve the symptoms of kidney disorders. It has also been found to help keep your skin in good order too.

Rose Hip Oil

Today there are many new preparations made from the humble rose hip, many cosmetics have rose hip oil added and the oil itself which can be obtained at many health stores is beneficial on burns or scalds, use at night it makes an excellent astringent helping to keep your skin soft and supple and wrinkle free.

Thanks to modern research in both Sweden and Germany the  variety of antioxidants they contain; carotenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, leucoanthocyanins and catechins, rose hips are considered to be a good cancer preventative. These same antioxidants are also used to prevent against cardiovascular disease.
